Trumpet Playing I've been playing cornet or trumpet since grade school in 1964. At one time I entertained thoughts of becoming a professional musician. I started college as a music major. In college I concluded I wasn't good enough to make a decent living as a professional musician and I didn't think I was cut out to be a teacher. However, I continued to play trumpet throughout college and I haven't stopped playing for church services, weddings, community bands, Dixieland ensembles, and other occasions. My trumpet is an Olds Recording model, a beautiful horn manufactured by the now defunct F. E. Olds & Son in 1968. The Olds Recording is a professional grade model noted for its full-bodied tone, and visually for its combination of three lacquer colors: rose, conventional, and white (nickel) brass. This gives the horn a distinctly elegant appearance. At the Oct. 5, 2001 concert of the Lakeshore Symphonic Band, I had the honor of soloing in a performance of "La Virgen De La Macarena", a traditional Spanish song. The performance also featured Mary Burczyk on clarinet. I performed a solo “Trumpeter’s Lullaby” at the April 30, 2005 concert of the Lakeshore Symphonic Band. Here is a video/audio file of Lester Leaps In, performed June 15, 2003 by the Ozaukee Big Band. Currently I belong to the Lakeshore Symphonic Band and the Ozaukee Big Band. Return to Ken's page |
