The Ozaukee Interurban Trail between Cedarburg and Port Washington
The gaps in the trail are fairly short. All directions
assume you are heading towards Port Washington on the trail.
Downtown Cedarburg
- Start in
the parking lot at the Community Center. Public restrooms are located on
the south side of the building, and a water fountain is located on the
north side in front of City Hall.
- Cross
Washington Avenue. Pick up the trail at the green bridge crossing Cedar
Creek. Continue straight through the two fire department parking lots. (This
is one of only two original bridges from the railroad that still remain
intact. You will cross the only other remaining bridge as you leave Cedarburg,
but it is so small you may pay little attention to it.)
Grafton
- When
you get to 7th Ave. at the bottom of a hill, there is a gap in
the trail. Turn left on 7th Ave.
- At the
first stop sign, turn right on Beech Street.
- Ride
past the railroad tracks. Turn left at the stop sign onto 11th
Ave.
- Ride
straight past the Clark gas station. 11th Ave ends at North
Street, but the trail continues on straight ahead. (There is a bike
shop located one block east of the Clark station at the stoplight.)
Soon you will cross the Milwaukee River on a bridge
built in January-March 2002. The bridge rests on the same concrete supports
used for the original railroad bridge. The new bridge is also similar in
appearance to the original.
Country Club of Wisconsin (the longest gap in the
trail)
- The
trail ends at the corner of River Road and Mark Glade/Terminal Road. Turn
right and continue up the hill on Terminal Road. (Do not take the road
that dead ends.)
- At the
stop sign, turn left on County W.
- Turn
right on Ulao Parkway and cross the bridge over I-43. As you cross, note
the high-tension power lines to the north. This marks the original route
of the trail, now blocked by the Country Club of Wisconsin and the lack of
a bridge over I-43.
- Turn
left on Ridgewood Road.
- Continue
for about ¾ mile on Ridgewood. Pick up the trail under the high-tension
power lines.
In a few miles, as you cross Highway 32 and pass the
Ozaukee County Justice Center, note the twin smokestacks of the Port Washington
Power Plant. The trail follows the high-tension power lines approximately 2.5
miles downhill to the power plant on the shore of Lake Michigan.
West Side of Port Washington
- Just
after passing the Ozaukee County Highway Department garages, the trail ends
at Oakland Ave. Turn right on Oakland and cross the railroad tracks.
- Turn
left on Park Street. Follow Park Street and pick up the trail under the
high-tension power lines.
Downtown Port Washington
- The
trail ends on Wisconsin Street at a new public restroom. There is a picnic
table, a trail map, and drinking water here. At this point the trail
appears to continue straight ahead, but this small trail dead-ends at the
harbor.
- Turn
left on Wisconsin St.
- At
the stoplight, turn right on Grand Ave. Follow Grand to the harbor,
straight past the Smith Brothers Restaurant.
- Follow
the harbor toward the north. A bike shop is located on Pier Street one
block west of the fish cleaning station.
- The
trail continues to the north toward behind (on the west side of) the
Lighthouse Condominiums.
